What do these first pages of the book reveal to you about understanding culture as a concept?
When the teachers first arrive to the college in china. They had gather information about what life would be like their before hand from people that they knew. So they began to come up with these pre- misconceptions of what life would be like their for the next two years. Once they arrived that all changed, those misconceptions begin to go away. They began learning to understand the things that they should and should not be doing through their students work because they where the ones that where watching them so closely. Also the looked around the college began to just pay close attention to things that the people did throughout the day. Started to understand the traditions of the China.

Where do issues of culture appear in these pages?
The number one culture issues that stand out are the things that American traditions or habits that do in their everyday life. Yet the traditions of the Chinese culture are clashing with the Americans. In a way that the Chinese found very rude, causing the teachers to look foolish in the eyes of the students and the elders of they soon had to understand what they needed to learn the ways of the Chinese. So that they can adapt to it. Culture is shown through they way that the students at the college for two week have military training with their uniforms during their term. The teachers did not quite understand why they had to go through this. Until they found out through reading of their students work that their country found that serving in the military was hard work, great for the country. That students would have great understanding of what they life was like, with the additions of having the experience. Also, when with them begin foreigners to the college the found the college spending money on things that they did not need. When they tried to speak out about it they found that it did not work, they got the complete opposite of it they just continue to spend money on them. Then began to realize that it was just the way of the culture their.
